The Venison Donation Coalition of Western and Central New York Pantry Project
Mission:
Transforming a renewable natural resource into nutritious food for those less fortunate and in need.
Our Goals:
Who We Are:
The Venison Donation Coalition was started by
sportsmen and women in 1999 and is a not-for-profit
organization (501-C3) helping to get NYS deer to those in need and support hunting in the state. Please consider
donating a deer this year or making a tax-deductible
charitable contribution to support the program.
Having come together from many walks of life to help feed those in need, we are a Grassroots, blue collar, hometown effort to help YOU feed folks in YOUR community with the deer you have succeeded in harvesting. Your deer will go directly to a pantry near you.
Our 7 member volunteer BOD Consists of a retired County Planner, retired Math teacher, a Retired Rochester City Fire fighter, a Venison processor from Onondaga county, a farmer from Delaware county, a former Food Bank employee, and President of the Greater Rochester / Southern Tier Chapter of the National Deer Association,
A part time Program aide is the glue that holds our group together with her computer skills and record keeping. A Volunteer Advisor provides assistance to interested Meat processors and insight into deer Management in NY.
Our address, phone, and mail room services are located in the Steuben County Office building which shows Steuben County’s support for what we do.
Our History
Legislation was enacted in 1993 authorizing the donation of Big Game to charitable organizations. Sportsmen’s groups were largely responsible for these programs in the early years. The Venison Donation Coalition got its start in 1999 when Chemung and Steuben County Sportsmen’s Federations backed up the effort with funds to pay 2 processors. One Thousand pounds was gathered.
From 2000 to 2021, the venison donation program expanded to 85 processors in 52 counties throughout New York State. Nine regional food banks and food pantries supported the entire state with distribution of venison to those in need.
Since 1999, the Venison Donation Coalition has been highly successful in its goal to feed the hungry throughout New York State. We have processed and average of 38 TONS ANNUALLY and in 2012 we surpassed 4 MILLION SERVINGS of highly nutritious meat being provided to individuals and children in need.
In 2022, the decision was made to modify the venison donation program. The Venison Donation Coalition, Inc. would focus its activities on fourteen food pantries in nine counties in Western and Central New York. Feeding New York State would administer the program implemented by regional Food Banks statewide.
You can help by donating $1 or more when you purchase your hunting license. One dollar will feed four people. Financial donations are appreciated and tax deductible.
